Raleighfalls/Voltzberg

A big nature reserve (80,000 ha), far from the coast in lowland rain forest. The Raleighfalls are rapids in the Coppename river and the area has granite outcrops like the Voltzberg (on the photograph). There are accomodations on Fungu island in the Coppename river and reservations can be made with STINASU (foundation for nature preservation in Suriname) or with tour operators. The trip to Fungu island can be made by plane from Paramaribo or by driving 3 hours to Bitagron on the Coppename river and from there 3 hours by boat. A camp can be made at the foot of the Voltzberg, at an hour walk from the main camp, where the forest around the open granite hills is unforgettable.

The area has a bird species count of more than 470 and is by far the richest known in Suriname. A List of all the species with an indication of how often they have been observed is on th next page. The bird names are linked to a page that has a description and a photo of it and sometimes the sound. The list includes the cock-of-the-rock (a lek with tens of birds near the Voltzberg), many hawks and eagles, 21 macaws and parrots, 24 hummingbirds, many antbirds and flycatchers, 21 tanagers etc. Many species of mammals are also known from the reserve like several spotted cats and 8 primates.
